A Historic Kiln Nestled in Gojozaka, Kyoto

Located just off the historic street that leads to the UNESCO World Heritage site Kiyomizu Temple,  Kakouzan-kiln quietly resides in Gojozaka, a district in Kyoto’s Higashiyama area known as the birthplace of Kiyomizu-ware.

With a legacy spanning four generations, this family-run kiln stands as a testament to the beauty and tradition of handmade Japanese ceramics.

Surrounded by traditional Kyoto townhouses, the studio is full of quiet charm. Inside, shelves are lined with ceramic reference books and pigment jars—evidence of a life devoted to pottery.

Refined Pottery Inspired by the Elegance of Kenzan

Kakouzan-kiln is renowned for its exquisite tableware, crafted to complement Kyoto’s rich culinary culture.

Taking inspiration from Ogata Kenzan, a master of the Edo period, the kiln specializes in elegant ceramic works adorned with seasonal flowers and birds—motifs deeply rooted in Japanese aesthetics.

Hand-painted floral motifs

Each piece features hand-painted blossoms created with traditional Japanese pigments. The petals are individually rendered with delicate brushstrokes, giving the designs a graceful, three-dimensional effect that reflects the warmth and character of handmade pottery.

A Family Legacy of Craftsmanship

Kakouzan-kiln is a family-run pottery studio. The current head, Mr. Hajime Wada, is joined by his son, Manabu Wada, who naturally followed in his father's footsteps to become a ceramic artist himself.

While continuing the tradition of making authentic Japanese tableware, the younger Wada also explores new ideas—creating pieces not only for fine dining but also for everyday use at home.

Designs That Complement Everyday Life

Staying true to the spirit of Kenzan, the kiln creates a wide range of items, from mugs and teacups to practical plates—all thoughtfully designed to suit modern lifestyles.

Though contemporary in form, each piece radiates the refined sensibility of Kyo-ware and Kiyomizu-ware, earning admiration both in Japan and abroad.

From cherry blossoms blooming with vibrant energy to plum blossoms painted with generous use of space, these works celebrate the harmony between traditional Japanese motifs and modern functionality.
