What is Kyo ware & Kiyomizu ware?

Kyo ware & Kiyomizu ware are among the traditional crafts designated by the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry.
The term 'Kyo ware & Kiyomizu ware' collectively refers to handmade ceramics produced in Kyoto.
Ceramic production in Kyoto boasts a history of over 1,200 years, and during the early Edo period, the popularity of the 'tea ceremony' provided a significant boost, leading to the emergence of many master craftsmen.
By incorporating the trends and new techniques of the time, various masterpieces were created, marking a golden age.

The Current State of Kyo ware & Kiyomizu ware

Although Kyo ware & Kiyomizu ware are steeped in tradition and culture, they are facing challenging times in the modern era.
The widespread availability of inexpensive, mass-produced ceramics of high quality has led to a decline in the number of artisans.
Additionally, the aging of craftsmen and the lack of successors have become serious issues.
Despite these challenges, the high level of craftsmanship and the value of the inherited designs continue to be highly regarded.

KotoPotter's Vision

Through my many years of involvement, I've come to realize the need for a new approach that transcends the boundaries of traditional culture.
As someone from a younger generation (born in 1992), there are things only I can do.
I aim to collaborate with skilled artisans to introduce new designs and works that align with the times.
At KotoPotter, we are committed to constantly offering fresh ideas to help people feel a closer connection to Kyo ware & Kiyomizu ware.
Thank you for your continued support.
